Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin

School Profile

The Hochschule fuer Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) Berlin is a multi-disciplinary, application-oriented university of applied sciences. It boasts a student body of over 13,000, thereof over 1,500 are international students. Currently, about 70 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are offered. The university is located on two campuses in Berlin.

Wide Spectrum of Courses in Five Departments

The HTW offers an impressive range of study programmes in five different departments spanning fields from engineering, computer science and economics, to culture and design. Traditional applied sciences like mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and business administration go hand-in-hand with newer fields of studies such as information technology, construction and real estate management and renewable energy systems.

The HTW is regularly distinguished for the high quality of its study programmes. Together with other key qualifications, foreign language training is an integral part of each student's experience at the HTW. Students can choose from a range of foreign language courses at all proficiency levels. German courses are provided to international students. Subjects like "Scientific Working" or "Presentation Skills" also belong to students' course schedules. The Centre for Study, Career and Start-up Services provides students and graduates with a range of useful services for development well beyond the studies. A further strength of the HTW Berlin is its international network: it cultivates ties with over 100 partner universities worldwide.

Research at the HTW

The HTW encourages research and development projects, as well as other innovative education and cultural programmes. Contemporary topics such as information society, energy-related issues and environmental problems are covered. Whereas some business-related research concentrates on promoting entrepreneurship and improving the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, other research addresses social-economics and political policies, such as European and national labour market policies, or the effects of globalisation. Projects on the preservation of cultural heritage and projects from the field of design round off the spectrum of research. Within Berlin, the Federal Republic of Germany and Europe, the HTW works together with small and medium-sized businesses, unions, administrations, associations, research and training institutions, and others to fulfil these objectives.

HTW Berlin integrates research into its degree programmes by incorporating selected subjects into project work or final theses. Applied and contract research are organised with the aim of optimising processes and products as well as developing innovative concepts. Many of these activities result in new inventions and patents.
